Understanding generally follows, not precedes, action. The growth of our transparent selves (through blogs, podcasts, video sharing, and the like) far exceeds our understanding of implications. Future relationships, political aspirations, and even employment, will be impacted by what we say in public spaces that record our thoughts indefinitely. If the thoughts and views I held as a teenager were public, I imagine I would have limited political future. Today's children won't have the luxury of forgetting the less desirable opinions of youth. This short post - Public is the new private - places responsible reading of public material on the reader (i.e. we should know when something is not intended for our eyes). If anything, what is not intended for us is what we find most intriguing. I'm surprised at the lack of discussion on future implications of today's transparency.
