I agree that the filter is critical...but I think it's the learning/socialization/content network that takes precedence. The network serves as a filter itself. And the notion of integration/recombination is probably of greater value than the filter as well. A filter is a transient concept - existing primarily to enable us to do what we want to do. The filter is not the "end" - it's a conduit to enable more effective functioning in information overload environments.
