Museums and Web 2.0

As mentioned in a previous post, I attended a conference exploring what museums need to do to adapt to the digital age. Like many of societies structures for conveying (and fostering dialogue around) knowledge, museums recognize that something fundamentally different is happening - the role between knowledge provider, consumer, and content being altered. One of the presenters, Jim Spadaccini presented on the topic of Museums and Web 2.0 (.pdf). While the term 2.0 gives me a rash, the notions and concepts Jim discusses are important. Organizations - museums, businesses, universities - need to begin to participate in this new space. We need to be active in shaping our reputation online...if we don't, as Jim states, others will do it for us. Great presentation!
