The Role of elearning

What's the role of elearning in an organization (corporate or education)?...as in, how does elearning fit into the regular teaching/training work?

First, re-think the "e" in elearning. By now, most people have realized that the "e" shouldn't refer to "electronic"...but rather "enabling". As such, the two primary values of elearning are to make learning more accessible and more effective. Technology is a tool selected based on needs of learners, instructors, and organizations. No one solution works every time.

Two main roles of elearning:

  • Extend learning (effective) - this role involves the addition of discussion forums/email/virtual presentations, software simulations, etc. to existing learning (currently blended is the word used to describe this role).
  • Replace traditional learning (accessible)- elearning in this role is a replacement to traditional learning. A learner may have access to classroom courses, but schedule, time, personal choice, etc. make elearning more convenient...or the organization may find significant savings in moving the entire course online.
