Managing and Learning in Open Courses

As part of open access week at Athabasca University, I delivered a presentation on Managing and Learning in Open Course (slides are here). In this talk, I tried to pull together some of the data we’ve been gathering over the last several years of open courses. The focus is on the design of open courses, the technological structure, and patterns of participation. With several years of active research in open courses now available, a model of design, pedagogy, learning theory, and evaluation is emerging. The process has been transparent with critics and supporters both participating and offering their perspectives. Essentially, together, we’re developing a new pedagogy and practice of learning with technology. One that, as Stephen Downes notes here, promises a more sustainable model than what we currently have.
