Journalism

I frequently cite developments in journalism and news media because this field has been dealing with changes in information interaction (and associated power shifts) by end users for a longer period than education has. Emerging technologies have “brought about a revolution in content creation, granting the ability of self-publishing to anyone with an Internet browser”. The physical to online transition requires journalists to consider a future “based on a the link economy, search engines, online advertising, citizen journalism and foundation-supported investigative funds…if media doesn’t adopt these features, then they will have a tough time surviving.”
At this point, it’s too early to tell if traditional news media will be able to make the transition to a new business model. Almost daily announcements of newspaper closures paint a grim picture. Investors such as Buffet state they wouldn’t buy into the newspaper industry “at any price”. Different modes of interacting with information requires new structural and institutional models within a society. I don’t many higher education institutions are considering this important concept.
