The internet and social cohesion

A common assumption of heavy internet users is that they are less social than non-users. This assumption is reflected in images of geeks living in their parent’s basement, oblivious to the world outside. It’s a nice image as far as that goes. And it’s completely false. A group of researchers have published a report exploring social cohesion and societal participation of internet users. Social interactions with internet users is not confined to geography, instead, they exhibit a “different social cohesion”. Connections and relationships are not confined to neighbours and local community. Participation in society is also higher among internet users than non-users.
