Network Once, Socialize Anywhere

While focused on typical social networking, this concept – Network Once, Socialize Anywhere – is important in education. Most educational technologists (what are we called, btw? We need a cooler sounding title) have seen the future PLE image. Discussions of identity management (i.e. OpenID) may provide a way for learners to use blogs, wikis, LMS’, and other software seamlessly. But all the fun stuff will be happening on mobile devices. The software infrastructure is part of the issue…but as I see my children using phones, PSP’s, iPods and other devices, I’m starting to feel as if our focus on decentralization of existing platforms is missing the larger change – a complete shift to new tools for information access, communication, and learning. While we are living in and designing for a desktop world, our students are living life in their palm.
