Microformats

I’ve been hearing quite a bit about microformats recently. Definition:“Designed for humans first and machines second, microformats are a set of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards. Instead of throwing away what works today, microformats intend to solve simpler problems first by adapting to current behaviors and usage patterns”. Sounds like much of the discussion we were having about learning objects several years ago. Individual elements, with specific functionality, capable of forming connections due to open standards, is in keeping with the vision of many educational technologist of tomorrow’s learning. As always, the real challenge lies in the details…and getting everyone onto the same page. Sooner or later, especially with high stakes, the issue of power and control becomes prominent.
