Interiorized Tools

I’ve been following Konrad Glogowski’s blog of proximal development for the last several months. He’s expressing a view of learning and education that is similar to some of my own on connectivism. In a recent post, he states: “I believe that learning is tools interiorized and thoughts made visible.” While I have a slightly different definition of learning (actuated or actionable knowledge, derived through a connection-forming process), Konrad makes an important point about the reality of the tools we use for learning – eventually the tools become a part of who we are. In a sense, an element of our cognitive process is wrapped up in the affordances of a new tool. Changing tools can result in a different learning process. This, however, is still an area of learning design and consideration that rests in the future. We still haven’t entirely figured out how to make learning online differ substantially from classrooms. We’re still transferring rather than transforming our teaching and learning.
