News feeds to reshape the web
Quote: “Journalists and web experts in the US are predicting that news feeds will re-shape the way online news is published…There are now hundreds of news feed, or RSS (Rich Site Summary) software packages available to download free. Using XML, they search for stories under a list of topics and publications chosen by the user, then feed a selection of headlines and story summaries back to them.”
Comment: Blogs were the big thing last year…this year it will be RSS. RSS is basically a simple XML file (headline, information – or soon to be learning object) that is fetched by an aggregator. For more information see: Extending Blogs – Aggregating.
The concept of RSS is exciting because it has all the makings of a technology that spreads quickly: simple, useful, necessary. These traits always win out (winning out being defined as wide spread adoption) over complex solutions that have much more functionality…but are impossible for the average web user to grasp.
